I was recently gifted a car from my future mother-in-law. She gave me the title, it is an Iowa Title.

I am moving to Overland Park, KS in a few days and I have no idea what I am supposed to do about this car when I move.

Do I need to do something with this Iowa title? Does it need to turn into a Kansas one? What about registration and insurance. It appears that to get the title and registration you have to have it insured. But when I went to insure it the insurance wanted the registration? I don’t get that.

Also, I don;t have plates for it. Can I drive it without plates? Do I need to do this type of stuff before I move or after. And if the answer is after then do I need to file a title change in Iowa first? or can I just bring the signed title to the people in Kansas?

What do they mean by “inspection” that I seem to need before inspection in Kansas? I never have had to have my cars inspected for anything before.

I don’t have much experience driving cars and finally managed to get my License only during last week of October. Early November while backing the car from the parking lot my car came dangerously close to another SUV parked nearby, but i managed to take the car out without any issues (or thats what i thought). I did not bother to check any further and completely forgot about the issue. After a week cop came to my door asking questions. The neighbour registered a hit and run police report. Now i am charged with two complaints. Improper Backing and Hit and Run. The damage is minor (Just paint scrape, no dents or anything) and my insurance paid for the damage ($400) and the SUV was fixed. My car has some of his paint and i did not want to fix it. I got a summon to appear in Kansas, Overland Park Municipal Court. When the cop questioned me i did tell that there was a time last week when the car was close but since there was no sound i did not bother to check. What are my options here. I am primarily worried about the following things: -
1) How much fine will be levied?
2) Will my Licence be suspended?
3) Much worse, will there be any prison for me?

I admit it was my mistake and i should have been more vigilant.
Please help me.
